Roanoke Fiddle and Banjo Club
Bluegrass music around Roanoke

Founded in 1969, the core mission of the Roanoke Fiddle and Banjo Club (RFBC) is to raise awareness and appreciation of bluegrass music in the Roanoke Valley. In addition to holding monthly jam sessions, the club serves as a network for musicians, bands, dancers, and aficionados of bluegrass music. The Roanoke Valley Bluegrass Pickers is formed from members of the RFBC and features guitar, mandolin, banjo, and vocals.

Educating young people about the musical heritage of the Roanoke area is a priority for the RFBC. For their INSPIRE program,“Bluegrass Music around Roanoke”, the Roanoke Valley Bluegrass Pickers will present a performance in which they the instruments used in bluegrass music, address the history of bluegrass music, and teach one or more songs from the bluegrass repertoire. In smaller groups, the Bluegrass Pickers can facilitate a hands-on demonstration of the instruments used in bluegrass music. Each instrument used in bluegrass music will be demonstrated individually and featured within the group. Members of the group draw links between Appalachian music and other curricular areas, including history and math.
