Kid Pan Alley
Kid Pan Alley

Kid Pan Alley uses the songwriting process to inspire children to be creators of their own music, not just consumers of popular culture. Kid Pan Alley’s 45-minute Stand Up and Be Heard – One Little Song Can Change the World character development assemblies feature songs written with children in Kid Pan Alley residencies across the country that deal with issues of respect—respect for our communities, schools, the environment, each other, and ourselves - and encourage children to explore who they are and what they want to see in their world. There is an opportunity for one class to write and perform a new verse to one of the songs.

Background Kid Pan Alley (KPA) started with a brilliant, yet obvious discovery – kids’ imaginations and uninhibited thinking make them the greatest songwriters. Kid Pan Alley's songwriting residencies and character development assemblies give children the opportunity to express their creativity and work together to create something that is uniquely their own. Since its origin as a single residency in rural Rappahannock County in 1999, Kid Pan Alley has grown into a national education project enabling schoolchildren across the country to write original songs that give voice to their deepest feelings and highest values. KPA’s songwriting residencies teach teamwork and collaboration, enhance self-esteem and creativity, and encourage a love for music and the arts. Under the leadership of composer Paul Reisler, 25,000 young children in a dozen states have written, recorded, and performed 1,500 original songs for their communities.

World-renowned artists Sissy Spacek, Kix Brooks, Amy Grant, Delbert McClinton, Cracker, Corey Harris, and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra have recorded some of Kid Pan Alley’s songs on three professional albums: Tidal Wave of Song, Kid Pan Alley Nashville, which won Parents' Choice and NAPPA Gold awards and was nominated for a Grammy, and I Used to Know the Names of All the Stars, which just received the Washington Area Music Association’s “Wammie” for Best Children’s Music Recording.
